Nuggets Arthur Gets Second Opinion

2/9/2014

Injuries are nothing new for professional athletes. Whether basketball, football, baseball or soccer, injuries pretty much come with the territory. Some injuries are career-enders others require a little rest and rehabilitation. But what every injury has in common is the need for a second opinion.

Denver Nuggets Darrell Arthur obtained a second opinion after being off the court for weeks with a strained left hip. The second opinion confirmed it was only a bruise and now the power forward is back in the game.

Make Time for a Second Opinion

2/5/2014

We hear stories all the time about people being diagnosed with cancer or other life-threatening medical conditions. Just browse the internet for a few minutes and you can easily find someone coping with a disease or just being diagnosed and learning about their condition. Check out this story about a woman who learned she has breast cancer.

They may not have the same disease, the same symptoms or the same treatment options but what all of these people have in common is the option to get a second opinion. And when facing a life threatening disease, it’s not a matter of why it’s a question of why not?

In fact, these days many medical professionals may suggest getting a third and fourth opinion to make sure you’ve been properly diagnosed and that you know all the treatment options available to you. A second opinion doesn’t necessarily mean you were misdiagnosed to begin with. It could lead you to the latest medications, technology or procedures to better treat your condition.

At SecondOpinions.com we believe second opinions save lives and can potentially save the healthcare industry billions of dollars. It is our mission to help decrease medical errors and unnecessary procedures and surgeries, as well as, provide the best medical advice to patients all over the world.

ER waits can be deadly

1/28/2014

Did you read the story about a 30-year old man who died in the Emergency Room reportedly after waiting 8 hours to see a doctor? John Verrier showed up at Saint Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx complaining of a rash. A hospital worker found him dead in the waiting room 8-hours later.

The hospital claims Verrier was checked numerous times but an unidentified employee told the New York Daily news that he was never seen. The employee says his name had been called several times but Verrier did not answer. The unidentified employee also blamed the tragedy on staff cuts at the hospital.

Waiting the in the ER is not unusual according to a 2009 report from the Government Accountability Office. That report showed an average wait time to see a physician in the emergency room is more than double the recommended time in some cases.

Research from Press Ganey Associates, a group that works with health care organizations to improve clinical outcomes, finds that in 2009, patients waited on average six hours in emergency rooms. Nearly 400,000 patients waited 24 hours or more.

Verrier allegedly suffered from drug addiction over the years. But his family says he had been clean for a while. Verrier’s brother Charles conveyed something a lot of patients may feel when they visit a hospital or doctor’s office. “You’re just a number no matter where you go. That’s how they treated him, like a number,” said Charles Verrier.

Medical Misdiagnoses are Common

1/22/2014

Medical misdiagnoses are much more common than you might think. Take the woman who died in New York City earlier this year. For two years, she searched for answers to her medical problems. She was told it was asthma when it was really lung cancer. Multiple medial errors and a delayed cancer diagnosis ultimately led to her death.

A report from the National Center for Policy Analysis found each year 40,500 diagnostic errors in intensive care units lead to death and diagnostic errors affect 10-20% of all medical cases and are more common than prescription or surgical mistakes.

At SecondOpinions.com it is our mission to help decrease medical errors and unnecessary procedures and surgeries. We believe second opinions save lives and can potentially save the healthcare industry billions of dollars.

Patients simply upload MRI, CT, X-Ray, Mammogram, Ultrasound or Nuclear Medicine scans and our expert specialists and subspecialists study your images and provide you with their advanced second opinion. There are no appointments necessary. No spending hours waiting in a doctor’s office.

Second Opinions Prevent Unnecessary Surgeries

1/14/2014

Recently a patient, Ella, came to us because she was told that she needed spine surgery and was concerned about subjecting herself to such a difficult surgery. Ella had been in a car accident and suffered from severe pain in her spine after the accident. Her job required her to sit at a computer for many hours a day and this was becoming a problem because it was very painful.

Ella went to see a spine surgeon who recommended she get an MRI to determine the cause of the pain. When she returned to the spine surgeon with the results of the MRI, she was told that surgery was indicated to fix her spine problem and that the surgery could potentially leave her with some mobility problems. Ella knew that she was not about to undergo surgery with the risk of having additional problems. She decided to seek another opinion.

Ella did not know of any other spine surgeons and felt uncomfortable telling her surgeon she wanted a second opinion so she elected to go on the internet to research other physicians who could assist with a second opinion. She came across secondopinions.com and she read all about our services. Board certified physicians, easy upload of the MRI DVD to a HIPPA secure website and second opinion report received within hours of submission at very affordable prices.

Because Ella had a spine problem, a specialized neuroradiologist read her MRI and she also consulted with an in-network spine surgeon. Both physicians concurred that Ella did not need surgery; all she needed was a physical therapy plan and exercise. The SecondOpinions.com doctors referred Ella to a physical therapist who was able to help her and she has responded very well. No more pain, no more problems sitting at her desk, and the best part, No surgery!

It is important to have trust and faith in your doctor, but it is also important to be open minded and educate yourself about the potential healthcare options that may be available to you. In Ella’s case, she was fearful of having surgery, especially a surgery that could potentially leave her with disabilities. Ella realized the importance of educating herself and learning more about her condition so that she could make the best decision regarding her treatment.
Always get a second opinion. In certain situations, get a third opinion if necessary. An educated consumer is one who has the greatest ability to make the most objective decision. Ella sure did.

Second opinions save lives, decrease medical errors, and prevents unnecessary surgeries and procedures. Don’t think twice before you get your second opinion. It could be a matter of life or death.

Cancer Patients Forced to Wait Weeks for Crucial Tests

1/9/2014

Imagine being diagnosed with cancer and being told you have to wait more than six weeks to have crucial tests performed. That’s what happened to more than 5,200 cancer patients in the United Kingdom. A watchdog group blames it on the government’s massive reorganization of the health services department in the United Kingdom.

NHS carried out 1.6 million tests in October 2013, a 4 per cent increase compared to the previous year. A Department of Health spokesperson says, “But we are very clear that the vast majority of patients shouldn’t have to wait longer than six weeks for a test and we expect the NHS to take action to reduce these waits.”

People with cancer should not also be faced with unnecessary delays in their care. It’s scenarios like these that support SecondOpinions.com and its goal to provide affordable healthcare in a timely fashion to patients across the world.

Doctors Can Learn From Their Mistakes

1/1/2014

Most of us know in order to succeed we have to fail every now and then. The same goes for doctors who make medical mistakes. But in these cases the consequences can be the difference between life and death.

Dr. Brian Goldman is an emergency room doctor in Canada. He believes doctors need to talk more about their mistakes in order to learn from them. Goldman is a best-selling author and host of CBC Radio’s White Coat.

According to a study conducted 10 years ago, 9,000 to 23,000 Canadians die each year because of medical errors. The numbers are worse in the United States with 40,000 to 80,000 die each year from diagnostic errors, obstetric mistakes or improperly delivering medications.

Goldman believes the numbers can be lowered if doctors were not ashamed to talk about the mistakes or worried about retribution from colleagues. More transparency and discussion about what went wrong can save lives, according to Goldman.

People Using the Web to Obtain Second Opinions

11/27/2013

It seems the Brits are using the internet more frequently to double check their doctor’s medical advice. A new poll shows 75% of those surveyed admit to using the internet to seek second opinions.

Of the 2,000 adults polled across the UK, many say they search the web to seek out other opinions on their medical conditions. Of course this practice is more common among younger adults who use the web to search for anything and everything.

The majority of those over 45 said they would seek medical attention from a health practitioner if they were feeling under the weather. Dr. Martin Godfrey, managing director at 3 Monkeys Health and Wellness, says the results of the survey concern him. He worries self-diagnosis will become a nationwide problem if the healthcare industry doesn’t open itself up to change.

At SecondOpinions.com, we want to let the Brits, their European neighbors and everyone across the globe know that we offer an easy and affordable way to seek expert medical second opinions. Second Opinions Common for Professional Athletes

11/21/2013

It’s fairly common in professional sports to see injured athletes seeking a second opinion. For instance in just a matter of weeks, soccer star Daniel Cardoso went in for a second opinion on a shin injury. The Free State Stars defender fractured his shin bone in pre-season training.

An elbow injury sent Mets pitcher Matt Harvey to the acclaimed Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion. The right hander discovered he has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.

Then FOX Sports reported New York Giants David Wilson obtained a second opinion on a neck injury that he feared would lead to season-ending surgery. Wilson learned he has spinal stenosis and a herniated disc.

Second opinions are critical for these guys who earn a living playing sports. But you don’t have to be a professional athlete to get injured or seek a second opinion. Anyone in the world with pain, who needs a diagnosis or questions the one they’ve already received, should try SecondOpinions.com.

Even Good Doctors Make Mistakes

11/19/2013

Obtaining a proper diagnosis is not as easy it seems. A new study suggests doctors make the wrong diagnosis in 10-15% of office visits. And don’t think these involve rare diseases. The study conducted by the Houston Veterans Affairs Center found common conditions like pneumonia, urinary-tract infections, congestive heart failure and cancer.

A misdiagnosis can drive up medical costs, cause unnecessary procedures and death. Oh and misdiagnoses occur twice as often in doctors’ offices than in hospitals.

According to a report from John Hopkins in the August 2013 issue of BMJ Quality and Safety in Health Care, each year as many as 160,000 hospitalized patients die or suffer a serious, permanent injury because health care providers misdiagnose a condition, arrive late at a diagnosis, or miss the problem completely.

Doctors are often rushed and can make mistakes. Ways to avoid a misdiagnosis include: make doctor’s appointments earlier to get the time and attention you need with your physician, come prepared with a list of health complaints or symptoms, bring someone with you who can ask questions, insist on a diagnosis and then go get a second opinion.

Second opinions save lives and good doctors want you to get a second opinion. It will either confirm their diagnosis or find something they might have missed.
