Second Opinions Common For Athletes

5/30/2014

If you’re injured and receive a diagnosis from a medical professional your next step should be to seek a second opinion. Professional athletes do it all the time because an injury can sideline them for the season or potentially ruin a career.

Recently New York Yankees Carlos Beltran received a second opinion for a right elbow injury. Pain in the left elbow sent Nationals minor league left hander Matt Purke for a second opinion.  For pitchers with elbow injuries, a second opinion often serves as a precursor to ligament replacement surgery.

Baseball players aren’t the only athletes lining up for second opinions. Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee got one for a
torn ACL. It looks like his injury will keep him on the bench through the 2014 season.

A Sense of Purpose May Increase Lifespan

5/26/2014

We’ve heard that a healthy lifestyle, eating nuts and increasing fiber can help us live longer. Even marriage is supposed to increase lifespan.

Now a new study says having a “purpose in life” could also have an effect on how long we live.  Patrick Hill of Carleton University in Canada and Nicholas Turiano of the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York combined research to publish these findings in the journal of Psychological Science.

The duo analyzed data from the Midlife in the United State Study that included more than 6,000 people. Subjects were followed for an average of 14 years.

Overall, individuals who reported having a greater purpose in life had a lower mortality risk. And that was the case across all age groups.

Man’s Best Friend Sniffs Out Cancer

5/19/2014

Pet owners know how important their pets are to the family. Well now the medical profession is learning how valuable dogs can be in detecting disease.

We all know dogs have extraordinary sense of smell. Humans have around 5 million olfactory cells in our noses. Dogs have approximately 200 million.

A new study found that specially trained dogs were able to detect prostate cancer from urine samples with 98% accuracy. These findings from Italian researchers were presented at the 109th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association in Orlando, Florida.

The data analysis of volatile organic compounds in urine shows a promising approach to cancer detection.  Other studies have shown how using animals can help for patients with diabetes, OCD and other cancers including bladder and ovarian cancer.

Case of Incurable Cancer Becomes Curable with a Second Opinion

5/14/2014

What could have been a tragic story for one patient was positively turned around thanks to some dedicated doctors who believe in a second opinion.

The Journal of Clinical Oncology recently reported on the case of a woman diagnosed with advanced incurable lung cancer. An oncologist in Colorado made this diagnosis but felt this woman’s case needed a second opinion, according to the study author Ross Camidge, MD, PhD, director of thoracic oncology clinical program at the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

The 62-year old woman was a former smoker and visited her doctor with a cough, fatigue and weight loss. Her scan revealed a large mass in her right lung with multiple smaller nodules and infiltrates throughout both lungs. That’s why it looked like advanced stage metastatic lung cancer.

When another oncologist on staff at the university was asked to take a look at the scan changes were noticed in the patient’s blood tests. It was then determined there was toxicity from an antibiotic the patient was taking that created widespread lung abnormalities. Once the antibiotic was stopped, new tests revealed the patient did not have incurable cancer, but rather, early stage curable cancer.

Camidge attributes this positive outcome to a doctor who wanted the best care for the patient and a prompt, correct diagnosis from a second opinion. At SecondOpinions.com, we believe a proper diagnosis is critical to receiving the proper medical treatment.

Our specialists and subspecialists are available 24/7/365 to read your MRI, CT Scans, etc. and provide you with their expert opinion.  No appointments are needed.

5/13/2014

The New York Yankees are feeling the pain of having a number of key players on the injured list. Pitcher CC Sabathia has scheduled a visit with famed orthopedist Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on his right knee. A recent MRI showed fluid on the knee but no tears.

Now Sabathia will get a second opinion to find out what course of treatment he needs to get out of the dugout.  Yankees GM Brian Cashman says the best case scenario is Sabathia getting his knee drained, resting and getting his name removed from the disabled list.

Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda have all been hurt this season throwing the rotation into disarray. If you have had an injury you know how it can throw your life into disarray. Southeast ranks worst for preventable deaths

5/5/2014

Nearly 900,000 Americans die each year from the five leading causes of death. That’s the result of a new study from the Centers for Disease Control. The CDC looked at the five leading causes of death ranking potentially preventable deaths across all 50 states.

The number of lives that could have been saved is staggering. Up to 40% of deaths are preventable according to the study. And the Southeast region of the United States is the area with the highest number of preventable deaths.

Using National Vital Statistics System mortality data from 2008–2010, here’s how the numbers break down: an estimated 91,757 deaths from heart disease, 84,443 from cancer, 28,831 from chronic lower respiratory diseases, 16,973 from stroke, and 36,836 from unintentional injuries—and that’s just in one year. Mississippi led the pack for preventable deaths from heart disease at 48 percent; Kentucky topped the list for cancer at 38 percent, Oklahoma for lung disease at 67 percent, Mississippi for stroke at 58 percent, and Oklahoma for injury at a whopping 67 percent.

But overall, the region with the worst numbers was the Southeast. The CDC says the numbers in this area are influenced by higher levels of smoking, obesity, inactivity, stroke and diabetes. The agency is hoping this study will inspire state health officials in the Southeast to establish disease prevention goals, priorities, and strategies.

Studies have shown second opinions prevent unnecessary procedures and surgeries, decrease healthcare costs and save lives. At SecondOpinions.com, specialists and subspecialists are available 24/7/365 to read your MRI, CT Scans, etc. and provide you with their expert opinion.

Florida Hotspot for Medical Tourism?

5/1/2014

Rather than just being known for its beautiful beaches, Florida may soon be considered a hotspot for medical tourism. The Florida Senate just passed a bill that would market Florida as a destination for medical procedures setting aside $3.5 million in state funds to market medical facilities.

The bill also asks hospitals and other health care providers to submit proposals for involvement in the promotion. These types of partnerships are already happening in parts of the state, for instance, the Miami Convention and Tourism Bureau is currently partnering with seven area hospitals to provide what is called “medical excellence with a tropical flair.”

The bill now goes to the House for consideration. It promotes national and international awareness of the qualifications, scope of services, and the specialized expertise of health care providers in Florida.

You don’t need to go to Florida to get top notch medical care. At SecondOpinions.com , our U.S. trained, board certified, specialists and subspecialists are available to anyone anywhere in the world.

You simply upload your digital images (MRI, CT scan, etc.) and our expert doctors interpret those images and provide their expert opinion. You receive a report in as quickly as an hour. No waiting for an appointment.
