Blood Test to Detect Risk of Breast Cancer Being Developed

6/29/2014

While strides have been made in detecting breast cancer still 1 in 8 women will get the disease at least once in their lifetime. That’s according to United States Breast Cancer statistics.

It is the most common cancer in women and the most common cause of death from cancer among Hispanic women. Now researchers from University College London are developing a blood test to help predict the likelihood of a woman developing breast cancer.

The team was able to identify an epigenetic signature than can be detected in the blood of women who have an inherited genetic mutation, the BRCA 1 gene. This mutation is believed to cause at least 10% of breast cancers; the cause of the other 90% of cancers is unknown.

Regular Aspirin Use May Lower Risk of Pancreatic Cancer

6/27/2014

You’ve probably heard that some doctors recommend taking a daily aspirin to lower risks of heart attacks. Well now a new study says taking a low-dose aspirin could lower the risk for pancreatic cancer.

The study conducted by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, CT, suggests the longer a person takes low-dose aspirin, or 75-325 mg of aspirin a day, the lower his or her risk for pancreatic cancer.

The research published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, was conducted over 4 years between 2005 and 2009 and studied 362 cancer cases and 690 control subjects. 96% of those were low-dose aspirin users.

According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2014, there will be an estimated 46,420 new cases of pancreatic cancer in the US and an estimated 39,590 deaths from the disease.

If you receive a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer or any other cancer, SecondOpinions.com urges you to receive a second opinion. Studies have shown second opinions decrease medical costs because they prevent unnecessary procedures and surgeries. And most importantly second opinions save lives.

Study Suggests Nicotine Patch Might Cause Cancer

6/18/2014

The nicotine patch has been considered one of the most successful ways to help smokers kick the habit. A new study suggests it may actually cause more harm than good.

Researchers at Virginia Bioinformatics Institute found that nicotine is a carcinogenic substance that causes thousands of mutations of cells, which is a precursor to cancer.

Cigarettes contain more than 400 chemicals and it was thought nicotine was just an additive. This study now shows nicotine is as dangerous as smoking itself.

Nicotine is heavily used in smoking cessation products such as patches, gum, and now in the increasingly popular electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette.Future studies will now focus on understanding the effects of long-term exposure to nicotine.

Too Much Sitting Tied to Risk for Certain Cancers

6/17/2014

When preparing for alarming news one might suggest you sit down to deal with the shock. But in this case you might want to stand.

A new study suggests if you sit a lot you may be at a higher risk for certain cancers. The findings were published June 16 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Researchers collected data from 43 studies that looked at the link between sitting and nearly 70,000 cases of cancer.

The results showed a relationship between hours spent sitting and increased risk of colon and endometrial cancers. People who spent the most time sitting during the day had a 24% increase than those who spent the least time seated in a chair.

The risk jumped significantly for people who spent the most time watching television. 54% had an increased risk of colon cancer compared to those who watched the least television. And for endometrial or uterine cancer, there was a 66% increased for who watched the most television.

The study’s author Daniela Schmid, an epidemiologist at the University of Regensburg in Germany, suggests the higher risk during television viewing might be because viewers tend to consume unhealthy snacks and drinks while watching TV.

Colon Cancer Screening Cost-Effective for Elderly Patients

6/9/2014

Adults over the age of 75 who have never been screened for colon cancer would benefit from screening according to a new study.

The study authored by Frank van Hees, of Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, used data from observational and experimental studies and statistical analysis to determine the risks of colon cancer for groups ranging in age from 76 to 90. The study found that colorectal cancer screening was cost-effective for persons without major health issues up to age 86.

Just last month research published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggested CRC screening and 25 other tests had little or no clinical benefit to patients. The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for individuals between the age of 50 and 75. But it doesn’t recommend screening for anyone over 75 who has already been screened.

“This study has important implications regarding unscreened patients over age 75 and provides compelling evidence that these patients would likely benefit from colorectal cancer screening, preferably colonoscopy, and as close to age 75 as possible,” Amanda Clark, M.D., of the department of internal medicine at the University of Alabama, Birmingham told Medscape Medical News. Clark co-authored an editorial accompanying the study that also was published in Annals.

“Colorectal cancer screening should be considered in every person over age 75 without fatal illness who has not had prior screening,” she said.

Four new genes added to the ‘inherited breast cancer’ risk list

6/7/2014

Most of us have heard of the abnormal genes inherited in certain breast cancer cases called BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Well now researchers have located four more genes that increase the risk of breast cancer when mutated.

Researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah have discovered four new gene mutations that increase inherited breast cancer susceptibilities. These genes are called RINT1, MRE11A, RAD50 and NBN to the growing list of higher risk genes.

Before a cell becomes cancerous, a number of mistakes need to be present in its genetic code. These mistakes are referred to as mutations and being born with a mutation could increase an individual’s risk of developing breast cancer. RINT1 was detected to additionally increase risk for a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal and gynecological cancers in families that carry the gene mutation.

A diagnosis of breast cancer should be followed by a second opinion.  At SecondOpinions.com, our specialists and subspecialists in all fields of medicine are available to you 24/7/365 days a year in all 50 states to deliver your expert second opinion.

Breath Test May Spot Lung Cancer

6/4/2014

Lung cancer is the top cancer killer in the United States. A new device may revolutionize the screening process for lung cancer as well as diagnosis. And we know screening can substantially impact survival.

Researchers have developed a breathalyzer that can be used to determine if someone has lung cancer and how bad the cancer is according to study author Dr. Nir Peled, an oncologist with the Davidoff Cancer Center in Israel.

The device worked in four out of five cases as reported recently at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago.

For years, researchers have been investigating ways to detect lung cancer from a person’s breath because tumors produce a certain scent. In fact dogs have been trained to sniff it out.

A lung cancer breathalyzer could provide a low-cost first step to weed out people who definitely don’t have lung cancer, potentially lowering the overall cost of lung cancer screening, Patel said. The device could prove valuable in helping determine patients who need more intensive screening for lung cancer.
