Potential New Strategy to Treat Ovarian Cancer

4/28/2014

There may be a new way to fight ovarian cancer, the deadliest of all gynecological cancers. Scientists at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom says recently developed drugs have helped increase survival rates by targeting a tumor’s blood vessels that supply essential nutrients and oxygen to cancer cells. But many patients develop resistance to these therapies and grow new blood vessels that spread the cancer again.

Now a team of researchers say the best approach is blocking several avenues that tumor cells use to escape eradication. By knocking down the proteins that help grow these new blood vessels, researchers were able to reduce activity of growth factors and stop ovarian cancer cells.

The new information will help in the development of new anticancer drugs aimed against these growth factors. Current drugs only target one molecule. Targeting multiple factors and blocking several avenues tumor cells use to grow may be a better strategy.

At SecondOpinions.com, we’re always looking for ways to improve medical treatment to people around the world. Respected Surgeon Says Get a Second Opinion

4/24/2014

Dr. Marty Makary is a practicing surgeon at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. He recently wrote a book titled Unaccountable: What Hospital Won’t Tell You and How Transparency Can Revolutionize Health Care. The book has had an impact on health policy.

Makary was recently interviewed and featured by Forbes magazine. He emphasizes ethical importance of transparency and is challenging his medical colleagues to embrace more honest ways of communicating with patients.

Makary admits it can take time to adopt best practices in health care. He says one area that’s still challenging is the under-utilization of minimally invasive surgeries which can either cut in half or eliminate altogether the risk of wound infection and reduce re-admission rates.

It is this area of medicine where Makary believes there needs to be more transparency. He urges all patients to seek out a second opinion because studies show they reduce medical errors and healthcare costs by preventing unnecessary surgeries and procedures. They also save lives.

We share Makary’s philosophy at SecondOpinions.com. We want to make it easy and affordable for people across the globe to obtain second opinions from top U.S. trained doctors.

12 Million Misdiagnosed Each Year in the United States

4/23/2014

If this report doesn’t scare I don’t know what will. Three separate studies reveal that 12 million Americans are misdiagnosed each year. That’s more than 5% of all patients according to a study published in BMJ Quality and Safety, The International Journal of Healthcare Improvement.

Researchers from Houston Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine calculated these numbers of misdiagnoses that are the result of doctors failing to follow up on “red flags” for cancer and other serious illnesses.

The number of medical misdiagnoses that result in death or increased health problems is the reason we created SecondOpinions.com. We make it easy and affordable for everyone in the world to get a second opinion.

Radiation therapy improved by blocking DNA repair mechanisms

4/10/2014

New research brings encouraging news to people who suffer from highly fatal brain tumors called glioblastomas. Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have discovered that blocking critical DNA repair mechanisms could improve the effectiveness of radiation therapy for these specific brain tumors.

DNA must be repaired for tumors to keep growing. Radiation therapy causes double strand breaks in that DNA blocking glioblastomas which are highly resistant to radiation therapy. Blocking the growth of those tumors or slowing the progression of this disease can extend a patient’s survival.

The findings were published in a recent issue of Clinical Cancer Research. Additionally, researchers believe combining RT with a drug called NVP-BEZ235 would significantly improve survival rates.

At SecondOpinions.com, we want to improve survival rates by offering people around the world an affordable way to get a second opinion. Patients simply upload MRI, CT, X-Ray, Mammogram, Ultrasound or Nuclear Medicine scans and our expert specialists and subspecialists study your images and provide you with their advanced second opinion.

Milk once a day may keep the ortho away

4/8/2014

A new study shows drinking one glass of milk a day can slow down the progression of osteoarthritis of the knee in women. Researchers at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, studied a group of men and women and found the positive effects did not apply to men.

The women who participated in the study regularly drank fat-free or low-fat milk. But researchers say their findings revealed that yogurt did not affect OA progression and the consumption of cheese actually increased progression of the disease.

This is the first evidence linking milk consumption to slowed progression of OA, a degeneration of the cartilage and underlying bone in a joint. The findings were published in the American College of Rheumatology journal Arthritis Care & Research.

According to the CDC, an estimated 27 million adults in the US over the age of 25 have osteoarthritis. By age 85, 1 in 2 people may develop this condition.

It is likely the majority of those affected will need an MRI or CT scan at some point. At SecondOpinions.com, we offer affordable, expert advice on your digital images. Older Women & Alzheimer’s

4/3/2014

It’s a well-known fact – as women get older their risk of developing breast cancer increases. A new report from the Alzheimer’s Association shows the same is evident in older women with Alzheimer’s.

The 2014 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report involved a survey of 3,102 American adults. It showed women in their 60s are, twice as likely, to develop Alzheimer’s disease than breast cancer.

Every 67 seconds, someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease. Around 5 million Americans have it and approximately 3.2 million of these are women. It is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.

There are a number of theories as to why women are more affected including longer life spans, sex-specific hormones and a specific gene variant that is more prevalent in women. None of these theories is conclusive and scientists say more research is needed on this topic.

Research has proven that second opinions decrease medical costs, improve health care and save lives. That’s why SecondOpinions.com provides access to U.S. trained, board certified doctors to people all over the world.

Origins of Rare Type of Thyroid Cancer Identified

4/2/2014

A study published in the World Journal of Surgery reveals a major development in identifying and treating a rare form of thyroid cancer.  In a scientific first, the fusion of two genes, ALK and EML4, has been identified as the genetic driver in papillary thyroid cancer.

The tumor cells of a 62-year-old patient were studied and a comparison of the tumor DNA to the patient’s normal DNA found 57 mutations in 55 genes of the cancer genome. The research also found the rearrangement between two genes. The fusion and the relocation allowed scientists to determine this was the genetic drive of the patient’s cancer.

These groundbreaking findings allowed scientists to recommend a certain course of treatment for the patient that lead to halting the progression of the disease for 6-months.  These findings could ultimately do the same for other patients.

Global Burden of Breast Cancer

4/1/2014

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.

The statistics are much more alarming in low income countries where breast cancer has been increasing at a rate of 3.1% every year. That is according to Prof. Peter Boyle director of the University of Strathclyde Institute of Global Public Health at the International Prevention Research Institute (iPRI) in France.

Professor Boyle says although the majority of new diagnoses are among women in developed countries, the number of deaths each year, 450,000, are now equally divided between developed and undeveloped countries.

According to Boyle, many factors contribute to increasing rates of breast cancer diagnosis including increasing population size, long life expectancy, an increase in awareness of the disease and the introduction of early detection programs in countries with fewer resources.

To reduce the rates, Boyle says there needs to be appropriate treatment facilities available – and he found this is not always the case, particularly in low-income countries.

But it is not all bad news. In Scotland, the death rate from breast cancer is at its lowest in 100 years. Boyle attributes this to the development and availability of effective treatments, the National Health Service breast screening program, free access to high-quality treatment and diagnostic facilities, and overall increased awareness among women.
