As seen in USA Today: The Clock on Kevin Durant’s Recovery Has Officially Begun

11/20/2014

It is always necessary to get a second opinion, especially when surgery is recommended. The article below was featured in USA Today and below the article is commentary from Dr. Phil McDonald, Chief Sports Radiologist for SecondOpinions.com and TV Medical Analyst.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced Thursday that their star and reigning NBA MVP had successful surgery on his fractured right foot.

Durant will be re-evaluated in six weeks, at which point the Thunder will already be 16 games into the regular season.

Durant, his representatives and Thunder medical personnel spent recent days deliberating whether or not to have surgery. The procedure, which took place with Thunder medical personnel present, was performed at the OrthoCarolina Foot and Ankle Clinic in Charlotte, N.C. by Dr. Robert Anderson.

But because the Jones fracture from which Durant suffers so often leads to complicated recoveries, it remains unclear when Durant may return to the floor again. Some players, such as the Brooklyn Nets’ Brook Lopez, the Los Angeles Clippers’ Glen Davis and others, have had to have subsequent surgeries to fully repair the fracture. The Thunder’s hope, of course, is that he’s back before the holidays arrive and that the Thunder are able to remain among the Western Conference’s elite even without him.

Dr. McDonald’s commentary:
” The Road to Recovery” By Dr. Phil McDonald, Chief Sports Radiologist for SecondOpinions.com and TV Medical Analyst

It is very important to get a second opinion about a Jones fracture as treatment may vary given the location of the fracture as well as the type of activity a patient may be involved in, such as a professional athlete versus a weekend warrior. Professional athletes mostly opt for surgical intervention in which a screw is involved with aiding the union of the fracture fragments.

It is also key to get a second opinion when following up treatment of a Jones fractures, whether It has been surgically repaired or managed conservatively. It is imperative for the patient to know when to resume activity to prevent further complications and surgery.

You might be surprised to learn that medical errors are now considered to be the third leading cause of death. More specifically, diagnostic errors are the most common, most expensive and deadliest of all medical errors. Although the Jones fracture is not a life-threatening injury, it is important to get a second opinion as it may be a very debilitating and frustrating injury to recover from.

If you have been diagnosed with a Jones fracture or you are a physician wanting a second opinion for your patient, please don’t hesitate to contact secondopinions.com and get a second opinion from me or one of our other board certified expert doctors trained at the Top American Medical institutions.

Lead author Dr. Hardeep Singh, of the Baylor College of Medicine and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston, co-authored a similar study in 2012.That one was published in JAMA Internal Medicine and found that some of the most common reasons for misdiagnosis include problems with ordering diagnostic tests; failure by the patient to provide an accurate medical history; and errors made by a doctor in interpreting test results.

Gene That Stops Spread of Deadly Lung Cancer Discovered

7/24/2014

There may be a new weapon in the arsenal against lung cancer. Researchers from the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California believe they have discovered a gene that stops the spread of lung cancer. Their findings were revealed in the journal Molecular Cell.

The gene helps cancer cells pull up their anchors in the primary tumor and move to other sites where they form new tumors. Metastasis relies on cells lifting their anchors. Normal cells don’t travel. So researchers have established that for cancer to become mobile the cells in the primary tumor manage to overcome the ability of the normal cells to stay rooted.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Americans according to the National Cancer Institute. Lung cancer will take the lives of 160,000 in the United States this year.

The nation spends more than $12 billion on treatments each year. Despite the massive spending, 4 out of 5 patients die mostly because the cancer spreads so quickly.

If you or someone you love receives a diagnosis of any kind of cancer, you should always seek a second opinion. At SecondOpinions.com, our specialists and subspecialists in all fields of medicine are available to you 24/7/365 days a year in all 50 states.

Medical Misdiagnoses Common Yet Ignored

Drug errors and wrong site surgeries get a lot of attention in the news. But wrong, missed or delayed diagnoses are more common affecting up to 20% of all medical cases according to an estimate published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Dr. David Newman-Toker, a Johns Hopkins School of Medicine neurologist, studies diagnostic errors. He says cancer biopsies are wrong between 2 and 5% of the time. Wrong diagnoses often include the wrong treatment leading to deaths that might have been prevented.

You have to read what happened to one Florida man who was misdiagnosed and received the wrong treatment for a year. http://www.tampabay.com/news/health/medicine/medical-misdiagnoses-common-yet-ignored/2152949

Testicular cancer increasing in young Hispanic men

7/14/2014

Hispanic Americans are the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States. Now they have another distinction. Young Hispanic American men between the ages of 15 and 39 are reporting dramatic increases in testicular cancer, according to a new study.

Dr. Rebecca Johnson and her colleagues at Seattle’s Children Hospital, WA., analyzed data from the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results program. What they found is between 1992 and 2010 the incidence of testicular cancer among young Hispanic white men increased 58% – from 7.18 cases per 100,000 at the start of that study to 11.34 cases per 100,000 by the end.

Testicular germ cell tumors are the most common malignant tumor among adolescent and young adult men. Historically non-Hispanic white men have had the highest incidence rate. But if the current trend continues, Hispanic American men will outpace all other groups within the next few years.

Study links high cholesterol to increased risk of breast cancer

7/8/2014

We know from past studies that obesity can cause a number of chronic medical conditions including diabetes and heart disease. Well a new study suggests women with high cholesterol , which is usually accompanied by obesity, may be at a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

The study was recently presented at the Frontiers in Cardiovascular Biology meeting in Barcelona, Spain, and was conducted by Dr. Rahul Potluri of the Algorithm for Comorbidities, Associations, Length of Stay and Mortality (ACALM) Study Unit at Aston University School of Medicine in the UK.

Past research suggests that the obesity of a woman influences the rate of breast cancer cell growth and tumor size which is fed by high cholesterol levels. The new findings indicate women with high cholesterol  are 1.64 times more likely to develop breast cancer.

“Statins are cheap, widely available and relatively safe,” says Dr. Potluri. “We are potentially heading towards a clinical trial in 10-15 years to test the effect of statins on the incidence of breast cancer. If such a trial is successful, statins may have a role in the prevention of breast cancer especially in high risk groups, such as women with high cholesterol.”

To be able to use a drug that is safe and affordable to fight breast cancer would significantly help to reduce healthcare costs. That’s our goal at SecondOpinions.com – to decrease unnecessary procedures and surgeries therefore reducing medical costs and ultimately saving lives.

Half of all American adults have a chronic disease

7/4/2014

As Americans enjoy the 4th of July this holiday weekend with friends and family, there’s an eye-opening statistic about the health of people living in the United States.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, half of all adults in America have at least one chronic condition such as heart disease, obesity or diabetes. The report published in The Lancet says the majority of these conditions could be prevented by reducing certain risk factors.

Those risk factors include smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, excessive alcohol consumption, high cholesterol and poorly treated high blood pressure. The CDC report also suggests that chronic diseases are the main causes of poor health, disability and death in the United States.

Chronic diseases also account for most health care spending. At SecondOpinions.com we want to decrease medical costs by preventing unnecessary procedures and surgeries.

CDC Reports Obamacare’s Prevention Emphasis Will Result in Wider Health Benefits

7/1/2014

The Centers for Disease Control has released a report about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. While President Obama’s main goal was to bring the security of health insurance to millions of people, the CDC says Obamacare has the potential to improve population health over the long term.

The report which was published in The Lancelet says Obamacare’s emphasis on prevention could reverse the historic division between public health and private health care services. Andrew Rain, one of the authors of the study, says “The new law represents a historic opportunity for prevention and public health by establishing the first national prevention strategy, adding substantial new funding for prevention and public health programs, and promoting the use of proven clinical preventive services by removing barriers.”

The CDC report suggest that structural and financing reforms introduced by Obamacare have helped move America’s “sick care system largely focused on treatment of illness” to one that is focused on prevention, early detection and health promotion.

By the way, the report says by 2016, the number of people in the United States without health insurance is expected to fall by 25 million.
