May is Arthritis Awareness Month

5/8/2020

Despite what most people think, arthritis is not a single disease. “Arth” refers to the joints, and “itis” refers to inflammation. Arthritis is one of the most widespread health conditions in the United States. It affects about one in four adults overall. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis affecting people of all ages, including about 300,000 children. (Arthritis literally means joint inflammation.)

The most common types of arthritis include osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), fibromyalgia, and gout. Arthritis has several causes, symptoms, and also treatments. Unfortunately, there is no cure.

Statistics and Facts:

  • 52.50 million of adults have self-reported doctor-diagnosed arthritis.
  • 67 million (25%) adults, 18 years or older, will have doctor-diagnosed arthritis by the year 2030.
  • Arthritis and other rheumatic conditions are the most common cause of disability among U.S. adults and have been for the past 15 years.
