Do I have time for a Second Opinion?

10/28/2013

It’s no secret that Dr. Oz has been an advocate of patients receiving a second opinion when diagnosed with a disease or condition. And once again he is touting the importance of having another doctor take a second look.

In the October issue of Oprah Magazine, Dr. Oz says while seeking a second opinion might seem like a no-brainer, 70% of Americans never get that second opinion. Research suggests in up to 30% of pathology cases, a second opinion can lead to a corrected diagnosis.

The belief is most patients don’t want to offend their doctor by asking another doctor to run more tests. But Dr. Oz says smart docs know that smart patients are going to get another point of view before making a major medical decision.

At SecondOpinions.com, we make it easy for patients across the globe to get a second opinion. Our U.S. trained board certified specialists and subspecialists are available 24/7/365 to read your MRI, CT Scans, etc. and provide you with their expert opinion. Americans & Second Opinions; Car Repair Rather Than Medical

10/22/2013

A new poll about second opinions is not only shocking but scary. More than 2,000 Americans surveyed admitted they would be more likely to get a second opinion for a car repair than for an important health decision.

The survey conducted by Harris Interactive revealed 70% of US adults would seek a second opinion for a home repair or improvement and more than half for a major car repair. Just 19% said they would get a second opinion for a medical condition.

Second opinions save lives and decrease medical costs. Often times when patients seek a second opinion they find a simpler, less expensive and more effective treatment. This helps to avoid costly and unnecessary surgeries or other procedures.

There is concern among patients that doctors would be offended by patients who seek a second opinion. Foot and ankle surgeon Michael Goddard says health professionals don’t think of it as a breach of trust with a patient. He says good doctors want their patients to be informed when making treatment decisions.

At SecondOpinions.com, your health matters to us. Our specialists and subspecialists are available 24/7/365 to read your MRI, CT Scans, etc. and provide you with their expert opinion. We believe a proper diagnosis is critical to creating the best treatment plan.

Second Opinions Required for Two Top N.Y. Athletes

10/15/2013

The Jets QB Mark Sanchez and the Mets ace pitcher Matt Harvey both required medical second opinions for recent injuries. And those second opinions from renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews confirmed both athletes will be out for the rest of the season.

Sanchez was sidelined after his shoulder was injured during a preseason game. Rumors that the star quarterback’s career is over are just that – rumors. Jets coach Rex Ryan said he is going to be a 100% healthy guy. His career might not be over but his tenure with the Jets is expected to end soon.

As for Harvey, he will be out for the entire 2014 season. He was hoping rest and rehabilitation would be enough to repair a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow but that wasn’t the case. His second opinion confirmed he would need surgery.

Both men chose to get a second opinion so a proper diagnosis could be revealed and the proper course of treatment could begin. Second opinions are a necessary part of medicine today with increasing numbers of medical errors and unnecessary procedures.

At SecondOpinions.com, our specialists and subspecialists are available 24/7/365 to read your MRI, CT Scans, etc. and provide you with their expert opinion. We believe a proper diagnosis is critical to creating the best treatment plan.

No appointments are needed. Patients don’t have to wait days or weeks for a consultation. Our U.S. trained, board certified physicians are available to read your scans and provide a medical consultation to anyone, anywhere in the world.

You don’t have to be a star athlete to receive a second opinion. Get the peace of mind you deserve from SecondOpinions.com.

Is Becoming a Doctor a Financial Mistake?

9/27/2013

It takes passion, skill and determination to become a doctor, especially in these times. A new survey from personal finance website NerdWallet reveals most doctors are dissatisfied with their jobs and less than half would choose to go into the field of medicine now.

According to the survey, most doctors go into the profession thinking they will spend most of their time healing sick patients. But today many are overwhelmed with paperwork and could be saddled with more if the Affordable Care Act ever kicks in.

The cost of becoming a doctor has soared and it takes from 11 up to 14 years to pay back the student debt accumulated. Sure the salaries are still decent but if doctors are paying back loans, it’s at least 10 years before they start earning a full-time salary.

The survey also revealed that the least satisfied doctors go into internal medicine, coincidentally, these doctors are the lowest paid earning $170,000 to $185,000. The highest paid physicians are reportedly orthopedic doctors who earn on average $405,000 a year. The most satisfied are neurologists who happen to earn around $216,000 per year.

SecondOpinions.com believes in supporting good doctors and that’s why we’ve come up with a way to help them earn additional money to pay off loans or pay for more support staff.  We are a fully physician-owned and operated company that interprets a full range of general and subspecialty exams in all imaging modalities.

Patients simply upload MRI, CT, X-Ray, Mammogram, Ultrasound or Nuclear Medicine study and U.S. board-certified, fellowship trained specialists and subspecialist experts,  study images and provide their advanced second opinion. Our physicians are available 24/7/365.

At SecondOpinions.com we are committed to lowering health care costs and improving the industry for not only patients but for doctors as well. Learn more at SecondOpinions.com

Disruption in Healthcare – really?

9/26/2013

Disruption in healthcare is a term used often but not necessarily in the right context.  There are several reasons why the word does not apply and they were mapped out quite nicely in a recent article in Forbes magazine by Dan Munro.

The services provided in the healthcare system make it one of the most expensive industries created. As Munro points out, greed is often the motivation that fuels healthcare. But if the free market equation remains firm demand for medical care by patients will always be more than doctor supply.

With the average medical student debt of $160,000 there needs to be incentive for people to go into the healthcare business. That’s why physician salaries tend to be high. So, Munro points out that trying to lower medical industry salaries may not be the best way to reduce healthcare costs.

Most of the attention around disrupting healthcare is focused on low-acuity, primary and preventative sides of the system. If you can’t change the supply chain the idea is maybe you can change the impact on demand.

The problem here is often times insurance companies are blamed for big healthcare expenses but the net cost of health insurance is 6%. So for a $3.5 Trillion a year industry, instead of changing health insurance maybe we should be focusing on a different portion of healthcare costs.

And then there are the statrups – the businesses that claim they will change the world with their medical service, technology or procedure. But startups rarely change the world let alone have the power to disrupt an entire industry. That’s because to change the world requires massive amounts of money, groundbreaking technology and a lot of time – something most startups don’t have.

So this idea of disruption in healthcare may just be a myth. And while many may feel the system is broken – it’s performing as it was designed. It’s a business after all and while it’s important to provide an effective service – in this case saving lives – and most businesses require good customer service to thrive – businesses succeed when they make money. That’s certainly what our healthcare system has been doing.

At SecondOpinions.com, we believe we can lower healthcare costs in a very effective and real way.  Patients simply upload MRI, CT, X-Ray, Mammogram, Ultrasound or Nuclear Medicine scans and our expert specialists and subspecialists study your images and provide you with their advanced second opinion.

Registry of Medical Errors Coming to Canada

9/23/2013

Medical mistakes are all too common in the United States. But we’re not alone. Canada is now promising a new registry of medical errors after some high profile incidents.

One woman in her 60s had a breast removed when it wasn’t necessary and another wasn’t scheduled to have surgery until after the mistake was discovered.

Currently various health districts in Canada track their own mistakes but the province does not collect information in one location and analyze it.

Nova Scotia’s health minister says the new registry has been in the works for a year. An interim system will be in place shortly and a permanent one is expected next year.

With so many errors occurring, a second opinion could save a life. That’s why we created SecondOpinions.com. We offer second opinions in all areas of medicine because we feel that getting a proper radiologic diagnosis is critical to receiving the proper treatment.

Because of our proprietary RADIOLOGY-ON-DEMAND® cloud technology, we are able to offer second opinions at an affordable price and deliver radiological reports within as quickly as an hour.

Medical Errors Earn Hospitals Money?

9/19/2013

We have all witnessed or heard about things that defy logic. Well what you’re about to read is going to fit into that category.

A study published in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, in April 2013 revealed something that might surprise you. Hospitals make more money when medical errors are committed.

I mean I understand how it happens. Someone has a procedure, an error occurs and they have to remain in the hospital for more treatment resulting in a higher hospital bill. But does that seem right?  The issue raised by doctor and writer Michael Kirsch is if hospitals or physicians should be able to charge more for extra care that was preventable.

Kirsch points out that there’s a movement away from fee-for-service medicine which can lead to excessive care. Value based care where quality is measured and reimbursed is the new concept and part of the Affordable Care Act known as Obamacare.

Medical mistakes are difficult to define and there’s no disputing they cost money. But Kirsch says he’s not convinced doctors should not be paid for services rendered. Why should a consulting doctor, called in when a mistake occurs, not be paid for his professional opinion?

One way to help reduce medical mistakes is to get a second opinion. At SecondOpinions.com, you simply upload your MRI, CT, X-Ray, Mammogram, Ultrasound or Nuclear Medicine study and U.S. board-certified, fellowship trained specialist and subspecialist physicians study your images and provide you with their advanced second opinion.

Because of our proprietary RADIOLOGY-ON-DEMAND® cloud technology, we are able to offer second opinions at an affordable price and deliver radiological reports within as quickly as an hour. The price ranges from $29.00 -$99.00 per report.

MRI Predictor of Heart Attack/Stroke in Diabetics

9/13/2013

Diabetes affects 347 million people worldwide according to the World Health Organization. Many of these patients are at risk of developing other medical conditions such as heart attack and stroke.

A new study suggests whole body MRI may be a good way to assess these conditions in diabetic patients.  Whole-body MRI is considered a non-invasive tool because experts say this technique is not associated with radiation exposure.

Using this approach, large body areas can be covered without increased risk. Medical experts believe this could speed up effective treatment for these patients.

Along with its prognostic accuracy another advantage of using the whole-body MRI is that it provides unique insights into soft tissue pathology including cerebral and vascular changes such as restricted blood flow to the brain.

At SecondOpinions.com, we make it easy for anyone in the world to have their MRI, CT scan, etc. studied by a U.S. trained, board certified specialists and sub subspecialists.  Patients simply upload the images and experts provide you with their advanced second opinion within as quickly as an hour.

There are no appointments necessary. Our expert physicians are available 24/7/365 to anyone across the globe.

The price ranges from $29.00 -$99.00. In addition, patients can receive a medical consultation by phone or video chat from our specialists and subspecialists for as low as $49.
